Treatment for very fine tangled hair?

My hair is very fine, and I tend to wear it up in a ponytail or a bun using a soft scrunchie, rather than an elastic band. However, it tends to get very matted, no matter how I tie it or brush it - what can I do to untangle it gently? I've tried applying conditioner and brushing it through, but it doesn't work every time.
