Can Brushing Untangled Hair Create Split Ends?

I have very curly biracial hair (about 3b-3c) and after detangling it with a wide tooth comb I brush it with a bamboo bristle brush to smooth my curls down (all this is done while my hair is wet). Can this create splits in my hair even though it has already been detangled by the time i brush it?
