How can I untangle a massive knot in my hair without cutting my hair short?

I have this absolutely huge tangle in my hair at the back of my head, and I don't know how to get it out. I don't want to cut my hair short so is there any other way that I can get this stupid tangle out? (painless would be nice but is not totally necessary)
